KEARNEY, Neb. (March 25, 2008) Franklin Pierce University sophomore Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Academy (Conn.)) has been named the State Farm Division II Womens Player of the Year by the Womens Basketball Coaches of America (WBCA). The announcement was made tonight at the NCAA II Womens Elite Eight Banquet of Champions. Leedham is the first womens basketball player from the Northeast-10 Conference to win the award and just the second all-time from the Northeast Region, joining Tammy Greene from Philadelphia University in 1994. Leedham joins former University of Massachusetts Lowell standout Elad Inbar as basketball players of the year in either mens or womens basketball from the NE-10. Leedham was also selected to the State Farm/WBCA Division II All-America first team, marking the first such selection in program history as well. I think its really special and unexpected, said Leedham. I couldnt have done it without my teammates. They make me the better player and I think a lot of the credit should go to them. The State Farm/WBCA Player of the Year Award is selected by the nine-member WBCA Player of the Year Committee, which consists of one WBCA-member coach from each of the eight WBCA Division II Regions and the committee chair. Leedham will be formally presented her award at the WBCA Awards Luncheon presented by State Farm and Jostens on Tuesday, April 8 at noon (ET) as part of the 2008 WBCA National Conference held in conjunction with the NCAA Womens Final Four in Tampa, Fla. Its a tremendous honor for (Johannah) and Franklin Pierce, said Franklin Pierce Head Coach Mark Swasey. While it is a great individual accomplishment, it also reflects on our whole program and what the team has accomplished so far. Leedham, the Northeast-10 Player of the Year, leads the NE-10 with 22.7 points (3rd nationally) and 3.4 steals (12th) per game this season, to go with 6.7 rebounds (12th NE-10) and 4.0 assists per game (5th). She is shooting 48.3-percent (254-for-526) from the field (9th), including 35.8% (53-148) from three-point range (8th), and converting 83% (166-200) of her free-throw attempts (6th). She has led the Ravens in scoring in 31 of their 32 games so far this season and also collected a team-best seven double-doubles (17 career). Leedham has reached double-figures in scoring in all 57 games of her collegiate career, scoring 20-plus points in 39 of those games (23 of 32 this season) and netting 30-plus points 14 times (six this winter). She earned NE-10 Player of the Week honors five times this winter, running her program-record career total to 11. Leedham earned Most Outstanding Player honors in leading the Ravens to its first Northeast Regional title last week, averaging 27.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and four steals over their first three NCAA Tournament games.Leedham holds no less than 23 program records through just two collegiate seasons. She has set a new single-season scoring record with her 727 points to date, and became the fastest player in program history to reach 1,000-career points, doing so in her 44th career game at Saint Rose on January 26. Leedham poured in a program-record eight three-point field goals in a win over Southern New Hampshire on January 12. Leedham currently ranks third all-time at Franklin Pierce with 209 career steals, sixth in program history with 1,305 career points and tenth with 46 career blocked shots. She is also just the fourth sophomore in NE-10 history to earn Player of the Year honors with her selection this season and was a Daktronics All-Northeast Region first team pick for the second-straight year. In 2006-07, Leedham was named the NE-10 Freshman of the Year and earned All-Rookie team status. Leedham is the second National Player of the Year honoree for Franklin Pierce this academic year, joining mens soccer standout James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy), who was named the NSCAA/adidas Player of the Year in mens soccer in January. Leedham has led Franklin Pierce (27-5, 18-4 NE-10), ranked 18th in the final regular season USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II poll, to its first NCAA Division II Northeast Regional title. Amateurism Certification Process (con't)

Who:   The process will certify all domestic and international prospects planning to enroll for the first time at an NCAA Division I or Division II institution in the fall 2007 and thereafter.  As in the past, prospects planning to attend a Division III institution do not need to register with the clearinghouse.

How:    Prospects will register online using the same Web site that currently is used for the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse (http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/). Online registration is required.  No hard copies of the registration form are available.

In addition to providing demographic and academic information, a prospect will be required to answer five questions about his/her athletics participation, prize money earned, expense money received and any contact they may have had with agents and/or professional teams.  Depending on the responses to these questions, the prospect may be required to provide additional information.

Once a prospect answers the questions (and provides additional information if needed), this information will be reviewed and the prospect will receive a preliminary amateurism status report (certified, certified with conditions, not certified or pending). This preliminary status report will help Division I and II institutions determine if they wish to continue recruiting a prospect.  Starting April 7, 2007, all prospects enrolling in the fall 2007 that have registered and received a preliminary report will need to return to the clearinghouse Web site to update their registration form and confirm the accuracy of the information provided. After doing so, a prospect will receive final amateurism certification from the clearinghouse.  Member institutions will be able to access this information via the clearinghouse Web site for the prospects listed on institutional request lists.

Cost:    The registration fee will remain the same: $50 for domestic prospects and $75 for international students.  Paying the fee will enable the prospect to receive both an academic certification and an amateurism certification.  As in the past, fee waivers will be available.

Institutional Responsibility: The time period after which the prospect requests final certification and before the prospect enrolls in an institution is referred as the “gap time.”  The institution at which the prospect enrolls will be responsible for certifying the amateur status of the prospect during this gap time.

2007 Prospect Notification: Prospects who have registered prior to the opening of the amateurism component of the clearinghouse will be advised either by e-mail or United States mail to return to the clearinghouse Web site after the opening to complete the amateurism portion of the initial-eligibility registration process. Any assistance institutions can provide in contacting and encouraging prospects to complete the registration process will be appreciated.

Players at this years IPT can look forward to meeting USA-based coaches Joyce Jenkins, Marvin Harvey and Chamique Holdsclaw. (Johannesburg, South Africa) The Durban High School (South Africa) Boys Basketball Program will visit St. Frances and the Park School in Baltimore as part of their twenty-one day tour of the United States. The delegation of twenty-one student-athletes is the first high school basketball team to tour America in the post-apartheid era. Both visits will take place during this week.

On Thursday, December 15th, DHS students will shadow St. Frances students in classes and meet with faculty and staff.  Jamal Atkins, a 1995 graduate of St. Frances assisted in coordinating the day and has worked with Durban High School students and staff in Durban during the past year.  Joyce Jenkins of Futur, Inc (a nonprofit student-athlete support organization) has been instrumental in supporting the tour as well.   The Park School will host DHS this Saturday, December 17th, featuring a double-header beginning at 6pm.  The Park School has a connection to South Africa through alumnus Thibault Manekin, who supports DHS through programs with the South African program Playing For Peace.  The delegation is staying at Camp Pecometh in Centerville, MD, making trips to Baltimore and Washington, DC for the remainder of the tour.  DHS has been embraced throughout the tour, visiting the South African Embassy, the AND 1 headquarters and meeting with political delegates and NBA players.  Over ten schools have hosted the group in some fashion, either in the classroom or on the basketball court.   Durban High School is South Africas academic model and leading high school basketball program. Durban High School offers a positive and disciplined environment for boys to study and learn through athletics. Three DHS student-athletes participated in the 2005 National Basketball Associations Basketball Without Borders Africa Camp and are members of the South African National U18. The goal of the Durban High School US tour is to establish enduring relationships with American educational institutions that encourage international exchange and promote athletics.
